Middle East: GCC railway project highlighted during GCC Supreme Council Summit

The importance of the commitment of member-states to implement the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway project was highlighted by the GCC Supreme Council during the 37th Summit in Bahrain. Besides that, the summit saw moves to hasten the implementation of the project to connect Gulf nations via rail to transport goods as well as passengers. It is estimated that the more than 2,117-kilometre (km) long railway will generate 80,000 jobs when it begins operations in 2018. The diesel-powered locomotives will travel at a speed of 80 to 120 km per hour for goods, and at 220 km per hour for passengers. Saudi Arabias Transport Minister Dr Sulaiman al-Hamdan said that a big part of the project in the country has been concluded.
